Montreal Beck-ons for David? England midfielder keen on MLS franchise swoop

David Beckham is looking into the prospect of buying into MLS hopefuls Montreal Impact once his playing days are over. The England midfielder's representatives have been approached by American businessman Joey Saputo - the man who is at the forefront of the Impact's attempts to win an MLS franchise in 2012 - with regards to a potential deal. The Impact currently play in the United Soccer League's first division, one tier below the MLS. Beckham's LA Galaxy contract enables him to own or co-own an MLS team from 2012 - which could make perfect timing with Impact's bid. The 34-year-old has spoken in the past of his desire to move into ownership and, despite the controversy surrounding his loan spell at AC Milan, insists he has a long-term commitment to football in the United States. 'I have the right to own an MLS franchise, which I will action immediately after I have stopped playing,' Beckham said. And according to The Times, Saputo has confirmed discussions with a potential investor took place two months ago, but refused to confirm an identity. 'I can say yes, we were approached about two months ago, but I can't say by whom,' Saputo said. 'I think Montreal would be a great candidate to be the nineteenth team in MLS, no matter who's involved.' Beckham's popularity in Los Angeles has waned after his decision to leave the club for Milan earlier this year - he was jeered by Galaxy fans on his first game back in July. With that in mind a switch of franchise may also appeal to the 34-year-old. The MLS are committed to expanding the league every year for the next few years, with Montreal one of the favourites to join in 2012.
