Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes claims he wants to win the Carling Cup as much as any other trophy and denies it is a second rate competition.

Clubs have tended to play weakened teams over the years in the League Cup with the focus more on performing in the Premier League or achieving success in Europe or FA Cup.

At this stage, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to play a less than full strength team at Scunthorpe United in Wednesday night's third round tie and will look to give senior players such as Michael Owen valuable game time.

Will to win: Scholes is aiming to help United win the Carling Cup for the third year

However, for Scholes, the Carling Cup remains an priority and he is aiming to help United win it for the third year running and book a date at Wembley on February 27.

'I would prefer to be playing mega games than be sat at home watching them,' said Scholes.

'You do get high intensity games in the Carling Cup and maybe in other countries, cup competitions are not as important. But it is in our nature to want to win every game.

'Winning trophies is all about getting to the later stages ofcompetitions and having big games at the end of them. We want to winthis, just as we want to win every other tournament we enter.'

Scholes also is not expecting United to rollover Scunthorpe onWednesday as they have come unstuck and lost to lesser opposition inthe Carling Cup before - notably a 1-0 defeat at Southend four yearsago.

'Scunthorpe are a very good team at home,' he said. 'Anything can happen at places like that so I just hope we can get through to the next round.'
