Should England reach the semi-finals on either Jul 6 or 7 a four week break would see Rooney and Ferdinand back in training with Manchester United barely a week before the season starts on Aug 14.

'The World Cup can be a draining experience,' said Ferguson. 'It is the biggest tournament in their lives and they need rest.

Rest is the last thing on Rooney's mind as he and the rest of the England squad gear up for the finals at a training camp in Austria, with manager Fabio Capello singling out the United forward for praise over his attitude and commitment.

'It's really important that the other players see that Rooney, one of the best players in the world, wants to stay on the pitch and wants to continue to learn,' said Capello.

'Wayne Rooney is one of the best talents I've ever coached.

'He's a very important player and a big talent. Every time Rooney trains he wants to learn and he always wants to stay on that training pitch for as long as possible.'
