Manchester United weighing up deal for Real Madrid Champions League hero Luka Modric

According to The Metro Manchester United are weighing up a rescue package for Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, who is thought to be receptive to the idea of a switch to Old Trafford.

The ex-Spurs star has struggled to find form at the Bernabeu since making his £33million move last summer, and reports suggest Sir Alex Ferguson could be ready to renew his interest in the 27-year-old playmaker.

Modric has scored just twice in a Madrid shirt and was voted by La Liga fans as the worst signing of the season in a newspaper poll.

The Croatian was heavily linked with a move to United during his Tottenham days, and according to the Sunday Mirror, Modric told friends he would be keen to cut short his stay in Spain to seal a move to the Premier League with United.

Modric scored a stunning goal that helped kick-start Real Madrid’s fight back against the Red Devils in their controversial Champions League victory last week, and Ryan Giggs recently paid tribute to the midfielder’s effort.

‘It was brilliant by Luka Modric,’ said the Welsh veteran.

‘There’s not a lot you can do, going down to 10 men. Carra [Michael Carrick] was in the back four and he had to come out to Modric, close him down, whereas if we’d had 11, he would have been there probably.

‘Take nothing away from Modric, it was a great goal.’
