Manchester United v Tottenham live

Follow Sportsmail's coverage of Monday night's Barclays Premier League game as Manchester United host Tottenham at Old Trafford. It's Spurs' first game of the season after their match against Everton was postponed due to civil unrest, while United are looking to build on their opening-day victory over West Brom. Let me know your thoughts on the game at tom.barclay@dailymail.co.uk or on twitter @TomBarclay_.[LNB].....................................................................................................................[LNB]Manchester United vs Tottenham (8.00pm)Manchester United: De Gea, Smalling, Jones, Evans, Evra, Young (Park 81), Cleverley (Giggs 81), Anderson, Nani, Rooney, Welbeck (Hernandez 81)[LNB]Subs: Lindegaard, Fabio, Berbatov, Carrick.[LNB]Goal: Welbeck (60), Anderson (77), Rooney (88)[LNB]Tottenham: Friedel; Walker (Corluka 46), Dawson, Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Livermore (Huddlestone 74), Kranjcar (Pavlyuchenko 74), Bale; Van der Vaart; Defoe.[LNB]Subs: Gomes, Bassong, Townsend, Jenas.[LNB]Referee: Lee Probert (Wiltshire)[LNB]88min: GOAL! Rooney heads in for 3-0. That's clinical from the England striker who has looked threatening all night. Hernandez and Giggs link up with the veteran floating in a lovely cross that Rooney expertly flicks into the corner.[LNB]87min: Van der Vaart, who will play an entire 90 minutes, hits a shot from distance which De Gea manages to turn wide, albeit nervously.[LNB]84min: Well, Wayne, if you can't score from there... Nani lays another superb cross down the aforementioned 'corridor of uncertainty' but this time onto Rooney's right boot, four yards out from goal. However, the England striker can only blaze over.[LNB]81min: SUB: It's a standing ovation for Welbeck and rightly so as he comes off in a triple substitution for United. Cleverley and Young also make way as Hernandez, Giggs and Park come on.[LNB]79min: That's so unlucky for Defoe as he crashes a volley against the post. De Gea came for a cross and made a meal of it, the ball bouncing out of his arms as he closed him eyes, and landing at the feet of Defoe who hit the woodwork. Could have been costly.[LNB]77min: GOAL! Anderson doubles the lead for United. Fantastic team play from United as Anderson passes into Welbeck who back-heels wonderfully back to the Brazilian to fire home.[LNB]74min: SUB: And on comes the Russian Pavluchenko for Krancjar, while Livermore is replaced by Tom Huddlestone. [LNB]73min: Reknapp wants to make a change here, with Roman Pavlyuchenko looking to come on.[LNB] 2-0: Anderson finishes off a sumptuous back-heel from Welbeck[LNB]70min: United are threatening a second here as Jonny Evans hits a volley into the turf at the far post which Friedel turns aways.[LNB]68min: Welbeck's tail is definitely up, as he attempts an audacious over-head kick which he hits straight into Friedel.[LNB]66min: At the risk of sounding like Ray Wilkins, my word Wayne (Rooney) looks sharp out there. Another fizzing effort from the England hitman rises just over the bar.[LNB]65min: What a fabulous save from Friedel. United win a free-kick on the left edge of the box which Rooney hits cleanly. The ball might be heading in, it might be hitting the post, but either way, Friedel tips it round the post at full stretch.[LNB] Boy Dan Wel: Danny Welbeck celebrates his opener[LNB]64min: You've got to hand it to both Welbeck and Cleverley. I was thinking they would both be hoiked off fairly soon, but what do I know. A new generation of Fergie babes emerges.[LNB]60min: GOAL! United take the lead through Welbeck. It's a cracking ball in from youngster Tom Cleverley which Welbeck rises to flick an equally-impressive header into the far corner. [LNB]57min: Ooh. Young is free on the far post and hits a volley sweetly, but it's always rising and goes over the bar.[LNB]56min: Young's delivery from set-pieces is renowned, so United fans will be disappointed with their winger as he hits the first man with a free-kick in a good area.[LNB]55min: A tweet from our man Ian Ladyman on Lennon's wastefulness having been in down the right:[LNB]'And Aaron Lennon is an England player. Unreal.'[LNB]54min: You get the feeling Rooney might just settle this one. Good double save from Friedel as he denies Anderson and then the Rooney rebound from outside the box.[LNB] Speed merchants: Nani and Assou-Ekotto race each other down the right[LNB]50min: Lennon is in down the right having seemingly fouled his way through (although it wasn't given) but he can't find a white shirt. [LNB]50min: And now Bale is getting in on the act with a wayward, long-distance strike.[LNB]49min: Bale said before the game that Tottenham would test De Gea from distance and so it's proved, as Defoe smashed a shot down the Spaniard's throat from 25 yards.[LNB]48min: Spurs just can't clear their lines with Young eventually found by Rooney with space inside the penalty area - but his shot is tame and well stopped by Friedel. Decent chance.[LNB]And we're back under way here at Old Trafford.[LNB]21.00: SUB: Vedran Corluka is coming on for Kyle Walker. Apparently the Spurs youngster has been feeling nauseous all day and was sick at half-time so hence why he's been taken off. Must be some player to still have started the game with those problems.[LNB]20.59: For Spurs fans, will you just be hoping you hang on or looking to maybe cause an upset? Records are there to be broken, as the clich? goes.[LNB]20.57: For those whose interest might be waning from this game, my girlfriend's just sent me a text saying she's watching a programme about cows and bees. So there's always that.[LNB]20.55: Quick stat from OptaJoe:[LNB]'3 - Manchester United have managed just three shots on target in 135 minutes of Premier League football this season. Shy.'[LNB] Flare-up: Younes Kaboul (right) and Nani clash late on in the first half[LNB]20.53: United need a bit more vision from midfield, I think. Michael Carrick might offer that, or perhaps Ryan Giggs.[LNB]And that's half-time. After an energetic opening 20 minutes, the game seemed to slow down with few opportunities for either side. [LNB]Can see Ferguson making changes sooner rather than later, with Welbeck likely to be the replaced.[LNB]46min: And what's this? After a generally convivial first-half, Nani and Kaboul have a bit of afters following the Portuguese's late challenge on the Spurs defender. Kaboul leans his head in, which he would be advised not to do. Referee Lee Probert comes in to calm things down, and both players escape a caution.[LNB]43min: Clever run from Bale who cuts in on the edge of the box before squaring to Van der Vaart. The Dutchman hits it cleanly first time but De Gea, who has been generally solid, claims it well. [LNB]40min: Young is down as Dawson clatters in to him, with the Spurs centre-back receiving the game's first yellow card of the night. Young heads off the pitch to receive treatment but he'll be fine.[LNB]39min: Both midfields somewhat lacking a spark which is unsurprising considering the inexperienced players both sides have out.[LNB]37min: A high boot from Michael Dawson has the angered United fans booing the England stopper.[LNB]35min: Who cares if Friedel is 40? When he offers the kind of assurance to his back four that, in fairness, Heurelho Gomes is unlikely to ever achieve, he's well worth having. The American claims a corner imperiously.[LNB]31min: Good Lord, is that Jermain Defoe playing? I genuinely hadn't noticed. To be fair, this is Old Trafford, where Tottenham haven't won in donkeys' years, so I couldn't expect too much involvement from the Spurs striker.[LNB]29min: Cue the United chants of 'Wayne Rooney, Wayne Rooney, he goes by the name of Wayne Rooney'.[LNB] Close call: Rooney rues a missed chance for United[LNB]28min: Wayne Rooney - take a bow. The England striker plays the most delightful chipped pass over the Spurs defence to Young on the edge of the six-yard box. However, the former Aston Villa man's header goes just wide of the post. Ingenious stuff from Rooney, though.[LNB]26min: I'm a fan of Welbeck, but you just get the feeling Berbatov would offer more of a goal threat. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Bulgarian come on in the second-half should things stay as they are.[LNB]23min: It's been a lively first quarter of the match, without being spectacular. Few real chances, but you feel there could be goals in this.[LNB]22min: Fabulous cross from Nani down that 'corridor of uncertainty' along the six-yard box between goalkeeper and defence. However, no United player can get on to it and it goes out of play.[LNB]22min: Bale looks in the mood as he hits a deflected effort towards the United goal, with De Gea making a solid, confidence-boosting stop.[LNB]21min: Nani makes a break down the right and clips a centre across goal, but no one can get on the end of it.[LNB] Tussle: Spurs' Michael Dawson competes with Danny Welbeck[LNB]16min: There's the first bit of skill from Welsh wing wizard Gareth Bale, who nips round a few players before Jones takes him out. The referee doesn't see it and a goal-kick is given.[LNB]15min: Spurs have a corner which Michael Dawson heads onto the roof of the net. [LNB]14min: De Gea gets away with one there, attempting a drag-back with Van der Vaart closing in. The Dutchman fouls him but it's a bit risky. Watching Edwin van der Sar would not be impressed.[LNB]12min: Nani and Young seem to be interchanging from left to right. Could be potent if they can stay on the same wavelength.[LNB]11min: Nice passage of passing from Spurs, involving the young Livermore. [LNB]8min: And that's why Redknapp signed Friedel. Rooney powers forward before squaring it to Cleverley, whose placed shot is destined for the corner but Friedel turns it round the post superbly with his fingertips.[LNB]7min: Supposedly, De Gea's kicking is superb. Well, that certainly wasn't, as the Spaniard hits it straight out of play.[LNB]5min: A few lazy passes from Rooney but United's youngsters look full of exuberance, enthusiasm and talent.[LNB] Battle: Rooney takes on Assou-Ekotto[LNB]4min: Encouraging start from United as Patrice Evra wins a corner, which Phil Jones attacks but Spurs clear it away.[LNB]2min: Awful pass from Rafael van der Vaart which goes straight to Wayne Rooney. The England striker heads towards goal before passing it wide to Nani, who crosses back in for Rooney to head straight at Friedel. Let-off and really lazy from Van der Vaart.[LNB]1min: United show their intent straight away as Young gets a ball in towards Welbeck on the six-yard area, by Younes Kaboul clears well.[LNB]Kick-off: United get us under way kicking from left to right.[LNB]19.57: A lot of love between the two sides with Ashley Young and Aaron Lennon embracing as the two sides walk out.[LNB]19.53: A lot of attention will be on United goalkeeper David de Gea tonight after his gaffes against Manchester City and West Brom. And it's not like he has experienced players in front of him to help him out with Ferdinand and Vidic missing. Intriguing.[LNB]19.50: 10 minutes to go before kick-off. Excited? Spurs fans must be, after having their season-opener against Everton delayed last week due to civil unrest.[LNB]19:43: Interesting (if unsurprising) fact from InfoStradaLive on Twitter:[LNB]'Manchester United have won their last five PL matches on a Monday and are unbeaten in Monday PL matches since January 1998.'[LNB]19.40: Sir Alex Ferguson clearly has faith in young Danny Welbeck, who starts his second game in a row. He really blossomed last season on loan at Sunderland. United certainly know how to use the loan system to their advantage, don't they?[LNB] Scouting mission: Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini (left) with David Platt in the crowd[LNB]Meanwhile, Berbatov is named among the substitutes.[LNB]19.34: Redknapp says he didn't even know of Tottenham's woeful record against United and that 'it's nothing to do with him'. [LNB]He also reaffirmed that Modric won't be leaving the club. We'll see.[LNB]19.28: Anderson and Cleverley vs Livermore and Kranjcar - hands up who would have picked that as the midfield battle a week or so ago? Liars.[LNB]19.26: So Gomes is named among the substitutes - Friedel seems to be first choice for Redknapp. Explains his summer move from Aston Villa.[LNB]19.19: United have a surprise of their own with Mexican sharp-shooter Javier Hernandez named among the substitutes. Reminds me of Michael Owen in his heyday does Chicharito.[LNB]19.17: Another player who is a surprise pick in the Tottenham line-up is youngster Jake Livermore, who started and scored against Hearts in the Europa League last week.[LNB]Bit of a step up though, isn't it?[LNB] Debut: Brad Friedel makes his first competitive appearance for Tottenham[LNB]19.13: So Brad Friedel starts in goal for Tottenham. Not a bad way to make your debut.[LNB]19.10: TEAM NEWS: [LNB]Manchester United: De Gea, Smalling, Jones, Evans, Evra, Young, Cleverley, Anderson, Nani, Rooney, WelbeckTottenham: Friedel; Walker, Dawson, Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Livermore, Kranjcar, Bale; Van der Vaart; Defoe.[LNB]19.07: United have a very youthful feel to their starting line-up tonight, with Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones all starting.[LNB]18.59: Prediction time: I'm going to stick my neck out and say 2-0 United, goals coming from Rooney and Young. Go ahead, shoot me down.[LNB]18.52: Some positive news for Spurs fans tonight, courtesy of OptaJoe:[LNB]'8 - Manchester United have gone eight games in all competitions (inc. Community Shield) without keeping a clean sheet. Leaky.'[LNB] Staying put: United have turned down a ?12m bid for Dimitar Berbatov[LNB] 18.41: Just a bit of transfer news for United, who have turned down a ?12m bid for Dimitar Berbatov from money bags French outfit PSG.[LNB]With the Bulgarian's contract up at the end of the season and having fallen down the pecking order, surprising they didn't accept? [LNB]18.35: Losing Modric would no doubt be a blow to Spurs fans.[LNB]But what I'd like to know is, should he leave, would supporters be happy with Emmanuel Adebayor and Lassana Diarra as replacements?[LNB]Good business in my eyes, Adebayor and Diarra would improve the Spurs squad considerably and it's never good to keep a player against his will.[LNB] No show: Luka Modric won't feature tonight[LNB] 18.16: So what can Spurs possibly do to overcome their terrible record against United and cause an upset tonight? [LNB]Well, Luka Modric not being in the team isn't going to help. If you've missed it, the diminutive Croatian will miss the game as his 'head isn't right', according to Harry Redknapp. [LNB]18.11: Spurs, meanwhile, are missing defensive trio Ledley King, William Gallas and Alan Hutton. [LNB]18.07: United have injury problems at the back and the front with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Rafael, Javier Hernandez and Michael Owen all missing.[LNB]That'll be a boost to Harry Redknapp and his Tottenham side, who have failed to win any of the last 24 meetings with United in all competitions. [LNB]18.02: Good evening and welcome to the Daily Mail's live coverage of Barclays Premier League clash between Manchester United and Tottenham, with me, Tom Barclay. [LNB]It's been a relatively tame start to the season so far - Joey Barton excluded - so perhaps the likes of Wayne Rooney and Gareth Bale can get some sparks flying tonight.[LNB]  Fergie hails reformed Rooney after United striker makes flying start to seasonMy Club blog - Manchester United: Why splashing the cash on Wesley Sneijder isn't wiseIt's Rooney versus Evra for United captaincy against SpursFergie to make final bid to bring Sneijder to United as midfielder has Inter time-out[LNB]
