No disputing the stand-out tie in the last 16 of the Champions League – Manchester United v Real Madrid. The clash of the European titans.

United club secretary John Alexander said: “It is the game everyone wanted, but also the game nobody wanted at this stage. Shame it won’t be at Wembley.

“It’s the stand-out tie and we are looking forward to it. The last time we beat Real in the competition we went on to win the European Cup at Wembley, so maybe this is an omen.”

Real Madrid director and former player Emilio Butragueno added: “I think our fans will be very happy with the draw. It is going to be a thrilling experience for everybody.

“Manchester United are not just a great team; they are one of the greatest organisations in the world. We have a great relationship with them.

“We know it is going to be very difficult, and we know they have great leadership in Sir Alex Ferguson who we have the utmost respect for.

“Jose Mourinho has a good relationship also with Sir Alex, but he is under contract to Real Madrid and he will want to make our fans proud of the team and lead us to Champions League victory.

“It is obviously going to be a difficult tie, but we are Real Madrid and we will try to do our best and rise to the occasion.”
