Manchester United v Barcelona: Wayne Rooney's boots stolen on eve of final

United's management staff were trying to organise a replacement for his Nike boots in time for tonight's clash with Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium. Such is the global appeal of the final, Rooney's sponsors had flown in a custom-made pair of T90 laser boots for Rooney to wear. 'However Rooney was told a thief had intercepted the delivery, who was then forced to use an old pair in training instead. A United source told the Sun: 'Everyone is staggered that someone would actually steal Rooney's football boots. They were signed for at the airport and were being couriered to the team hotel when they were intercepted.' Meanwhile, World Cup winner Marcel Desailly believes Rooney has now moved into the group of current world greats. While all the talk has surrounded the personal battle between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in Rome, Rooney's presence has largely been ignored. Rooney is a world class player," said the former Chelsea player. "He is among the elite, there is no doubt in my mind about that at all. "The only problem is the England national team have not done anything to confirm it."
