24 May 2009 12:23
Peter Schmeichel. Manchester United goalkeeper, 1991-1999 Honours: Premier League titles (5), FA Cup (3), League Cup (1), Champions League (1), European Super Cup (1). Rating 9.5/10 Ability: Schmeichel had the ability to make the goal look tiny behind his enormous frame, never more so when in full leaping star mode and his reach in mid-flight was peerless. 9 Influence: His importance to the team can be measured by how long it took Sir Alex Ferguson to find a replacement close to his quality. 9.5 Style: A screamer and a shouter, Schmeichel let opponents and team-mates alike know he was around in no uncertain terms. An attack minded keeper with an incredible throw he was able to turn defence in to attack in a heartbeat. 8 X-factor: A commanding presence in a busy penalty area, he was pretty useful at the other end, scoring an incredible 11 goals in his career; none for United but he made a nuisance of himself enough to help out others. 8.5 Andoni Zubizaretta. Barcelona goalkeeper, 1980-1986. Honours: La Liga titles (4), Copa del Rey (2), European Cup (1), Uefa Cup Winners Cup (1) European Super Cup (1). Rating 9/10 Ability: An unfussy, unspectacular goalkeeper, Zubizaretta's greatest attribute was his positional sense which meant he was seldom required to pull of dramatic saves. A master of every facet of the goalkeeper's art, his longevity owes much to his incredible fitness and fine footballing brain. 8.5/10 Influence: A lynch pin of the famous 'Dream Team' of the early 1990s, he captained the side for several years. 8.5/10 Style: Laid back almost to the point of being horizontal, Zubizaretta exuded calm, serenity and security behind every back four he played with, qualities he was able to transmit to them, too. 8/10 X-factor: Zubizaretta holds the Spanish record for caps as well as the La Liga appearance record and played in four consecutive World Cups making him not just Barcelona but Spain's greatest ever custodian. His performance in the 1992 European Cup final at Wembley built the platform for Barcelona's 1-0 win over Sampdoria. 8.5/10 Overall legend rating (out of 50) Schmeichel 44.5, Zubizaretta 42.5
