Manchester United v Ajax: match preview

23 February 2012 11:19
Venue: Old Trafford Date: Thursday, 23 February Kick-off: 2005 GMT

Striker Wayne Rooney will miss tonight's Europa League second leg tie with Ajax because of a throat infection.

Rooney turned up to training on Wednesday but was sent home due to the illness.

Sir Alex Ferguson will now rest the 26-year-old ahead of the Premier League game against Norwich on Sunday.

"He has a really bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam and we gave him some medication but it got worse," Ferguson said of Rooney.

"He has been in bed over the weekend and came in today for the first time and we are trying hard to get him right for Sunday."

Antonio Valencia (hamstring), Anders Lindegaard (ankle), Anderson (knock), Nemanja Vidic (knee), Darren Fletcher (bowel condition) and Michael Owen (thigh) are all out.

However, Ryan Giggs (ankle) and Dimitar Berbatov (knock) may be able to return after missing last week’s first leg.

Tom Cleverley is also expected to play after recovering from an ankle injury.

United were 2-0 victors from the first leg in Amsterdam and Ferguson is determined to avoid a repeat of the Champions League game against Basel that saw them eliminated for the competition.

"The experience we had against Basel, where we were 2-0 up at half-time, that's in our memories.

"I don't think we'll be casual or careless about what we're trying to achieve tomorrow but it's a good lead. You can't dispute that."

Ajax have a few injury issues themselves as they travel to Old Trafford.

Derk Boerrigter (back), Gregory van der Wiel (groin), Eyong Enoh (hamstring), Andre Ooijer (calf) and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson (tibia/leg injury) all look likely to miss out, while Nicolai Boilesen (hamstring) is touch-and-go after sitting out the weekend win over NEC Nijmegen.
