Manchester United to bid for Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama this January

Manchester United will step up their interest in Celtic enforcer Victor Wanyama after the defensive midfielder's explosive efforts in the Champions League –as well as his recent goal against Barcelona, according to The Daily Mail.

Wanyama, 21, was Celtic's hero last Wednesday after scoring his sides first goal and halting the attacking threat of Andres Iniesta and Xavi. His performance was noted by United, with chief European scout and brother of Sir Alex Ferguson, Martin Ferguson, in attendance at Celtic Park to watch Wanyama.

Celtic signed Wanyama from Germinal Beerschot in Belgium for just £900,000 last year – but recently Celtic boss Neil Lennon slapped a £25million price tag on the Kenyan enforcer.

His display against Barcelona saw Sky Sports Pundit and Manchester United legend Gary Neville say: 'That display has put him right in the shop window and Celtic will do very well to hold on to him.'

Celtic and Lennon have been depserate to tie Wanyama down to a long term deal – however Waynama rejected the offer from the Scottish Champions, in order for a move to a bigger club. Although with a £25million price tag – a more reasonable offer of around half that price will see a Premier League club sign the midfiedler.

Wanyama performs best as a central midfielder – although he is capable of playing in the centre of defence. He is a huge physical specimen and an impressive athlete who excels in breaking up play as well as being just as dominant in the air.

With a midfield lacking tenacity and strength, albeit skill and flair, Wanyama has the strength and heart to potentially earn himself a move to the Theatre Of Dreams. Man United's midfield and defence have come under much scrutiny recently – and a signing of Wanyama's ability will be music to the ears of the Old Trafford faithful.

Although Celtic will be disheartened their midfielder refused to sign a long term deal, they will be encouraged by the fact the Kenyan still has three years left of his current deal - something which puts them in an ideal bargaining position come January.
