Third placed Manchester United are ready to battle Premier League leaders Chelsea for the signature of highly rated Real Madrid and France youngster Raphael Varane.

According to the usually spot on 'reports in Spain' United and Chelsea have made the Champions League winner their top transfer target this January and will fight tooth and nail to secure the 21-year-old.

Varane has largely been out of Ancelotti's starting XI at Real Madrid but both Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho will offer the centre-back regular playing action in the Premier League, something which the defender would be more than open to.

United and Chelsea are both thought to be ready to make a move for Varane this winter with Los Blancos looking for around £20million for Varane after paying somewhere in the range of 10million Euros for the player in 2011.

Varane has been tipped for great things by many in recent years, with Europe's elite keeping an eye on the defenders progress at Madrid and if United or Chelsea managed to sign Varane for £20million, many would see that as a major coup.

Madrid's apparent willingness to let the player leave Spain is thought to be down to the club readying a new lucrative package for Portuguese defender Pepe, whilst pushing academy prospect Nacho up the pecking order .
