Jim Leighton: Ferguson signed the Scotland keeper from Aberdeen having worked with Leighton at Pittodrie, but after a poor performance in the 1990 FA Cup Final against Crystal Palace, Leighton was dropped for the replay in favour of Les Sealey.

Massimo Taibi: A £4.4m buy from Venezia in 1999, Italian goalkeeper Taibi was jettisoned by Ferguson after just four appearances. A howler against Southampton at Old Trafford, when he allowed a Matt Le Tissier shot to bobble through his legs and into the net, was the final straw.

David Beckham: Ferguson became exasperated with Beckham's off-field distractions and, despite the Londoner having been elevated to the England captaincy, he was sold to Real Madrid in 2003 just months after Beckham required stitches after being hit by a boot kicked by Ferguson in the dressing-room.

Roy Keane: Ferguson has billed the Irishman as the greatest player during his 24 years at United, but Keane's past feats counted for nothing when Ferguson chose to call time on his Old Trafford career in Nov 2005 after Keane had been critical of his team-mates and Ferguson's assistant, Carlos Queiroz.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy: Ferguson axed the Dutch forward in favour of Louis Saha for the 2006 Carling Cup final victory against Wigan and it proved the beginning of the end for Van Nistelrooy, who was sold to Real Madrid five months later.
