Back to his roots? Ryan Shawcross could be set for a return to Old Trafford

Manchester Unitedhave reignited theirinterest in formerdefender RyanShawcross.

United's chief scoutJim Lawlor checked onthe Stoke skipper inthe 2-2 draw at Wiganon Saturday.

Manager Sir AlexFerguson isconsidering bolsteringhis defensive optionsafter seeing hissecond-string backlinetorn apart by WestHam in the Carling Cuplast week. 

And Shawcross is in theframe for a return tothe club he quit in 2007to join Stoke.

Ferguson wasreluctant to let the23-year-old move andinserted a clause inthe deal which allowsthe Reds to match anyrival bid if Shawcross issold.

Liverpool areamong the clubs whoare also believed to bekeen on him.

The defender mayhesitate aboutheading back to OldTrafford, having pushedhimself to the fringesof the England squadwith regular first-teamfootball at Stoke.
