Following a calamitous season at Old Trafford the time has come for the 51-year-old Scot to be relieved of his duties as patience is no longer an option for the owners of Manchester United; the Glazer family.
With a reported £150m spending budget for the summer transfer window, it is clear that the Glazer’s feel Moyes hasn’t done enough to vindicate his control of these hefty funds which could be key to the future success of the club.
In the hope of finding the heir to Sir Alex Ferguson, Moyes was appointed as United boss last July after 11 respectable years at Everton, which outlined the loyalty and Premier League experience Ferguson was searching for in his successor. However, now it is questioned whether Moyes ever had the credentials to live up to the legacy Sir Alex built at the club.
Back in 1986, when Ferguson took the helm at Old Trafford, he came with 12 trophies to his managerial résumé which included three Scottish titles and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. The ex-United boss also came to United six years younger than Moyes did, with three years less managerial experience, but 11 more trophies.
Upon personally picking Moyes as his successor, Sir Alex said him and Moyes were ‘cut from the same cloth’, but Ferguson was wrong. Moyes came to United wanting to win, Ferguson came a winner.
The start for both of them was equally bad; Moyes actually had a better record in his first 50 games in charge of Manchester United out of the two. In fact, if the 44-year-old Alex Ferguson did what he did in his first season back in 86/87 in the season just gone, he too would’ve got the axe.
Yet the difference was Ferguson came to a Manchester United that had seven league titles in the trophy cabinet and one European Cup – he arrived at a big club. Moyes arrived at an empire. Plus, with the focus of the public and media far more intense than 28 years ago, the chances of Moyes keeping his job after the season he’s had was always going to be difficult.
With Ryan Giggs set to foresee United’s remaining fixtures this season as interim manager, speculation has already begun on who the next boss could be. What the Glazers have learnt is perhaps that Manchester United require a proven winner to take charge, whilst the Old Trafford faithful will want someone who can continue success through maintaining the morals Matt Busby and Ferguson have installed into the club of advocating British talent in the team.
This will be hard to move on from for David Moyes, but best of luck to him.
