Manchester United defender Rafael da Silva signs contract extension until 2013

It is the 18-year-old Brazilian's reward for an outstanding first season in England. Rafael has made 24 appearances, scoring one goal and manager Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted with his progress. [LNB]Rafael, who arrived in July last year after being brought up in Rio de Janiero, hopes to have a long association with United. [LNB]He said: "It has been a fantastic first year and I have learned from all the players at the club but especially from the defenders. [LNB]"It has been an exciting time for me and I want to be part of this for a long time so to get an extension is unbelievable." [LNB]Rafael was part of the team which defeated Tottenham 5-2 at home on Saturday to move three points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League. [LNB]He could also be involved on Wednesday in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal at Old Trafford. [LNB]Rafael and his twin brother Fabio moved to United after being spotted by Les Kershaw, then Academy Manager, playing for Brazilian side Fluminense in a Hong Kong youth tournament. [LNB]After a year-long delay because of international clearance, Rafael was handed his chance in August when he faced Peterborough in Barry Fry's testimonial. [LNB]Ferguson described the youngster's performance as an "eye-opener" and he made his competitive debut against Newcastle shortly afterwards. [LNB]Rafael then went on to score his first goal for the club - a superb volley in the defeat by Arsenal in November. [LNB]
