Manchester United defender Phil Jones will not change his style to avoid injuries

Manchester United defender Phil Jones insists he will not change the physicality of his game in order to avoid picking up more injuries.

Jones appeared for the first time this season on Tuesday as United were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League. The 20-year-old made his return to action following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with knee and back issues. But Jones says he will continue to put his body on the line for United, even if that means incurring more fitness problems. Asked if he planned to take a softer approach, the youngster said:

"No, that's just my game. I am not going to pull out of a tackle for nothing. If that means getting injured, so be it.

"I don't know why I have had so many injuries. If I knew that, I probably wouldn't have gone through what I have gone through.

"It's football; and it happens. You move on. I have spent a lot of time in the gym and done a lot of strengthening and conditioning work. Hopefully that will stand me in good stead.

"Wretched Jones admits he endured a "wretched" second half to the campaign last season after initially impressing at United following his move from Blackburn in summer 2011.

"It has been very difficult," he added.

"I was in and out of the team in the second half of last season. I couldn't get a run of games together, which was down to the fact I was getting little niggles here and there. I couldn't get match fit. I picked up some pretty horrid injuries and I've had a wretched five or six months.

"I have had my downs. I've been in the gym every day, and that is not easy. I had to concentrate on getting myself fit and worked hard to get to where I am now."
