Sir Alex Ferguson's rant at Mark Clattenburg could land him in hot water after the FA took a dim view of his latest attack on referees.

Manchester United's manager should find out on Monday whether the authorities have charged him after he hit out at the official following Darren Fletcher's sending-off.

And while that in itself is insufficient to see him hauled to account, it appears that the FA are under increasing pressure to act to stop Ferguson's persistent attacks.

He said: 'I've been watching Clattenburg this season. He did the Arsenal v Tottenham game.

'You would have had to have hit someone with an axe before he would have booked anyone.'
