Manchester United and Arsenal take on Barcelona for German midfield maestro's Signature

According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona have entered the race to sign Borussia Dortmund's highly rated midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. Meaning Manchester United and Arsenal's hope of luring the German international to the Premier League have taken a massive blow.

Manchester United are thought to have been tracking the 23-year-old for some time as David Moyes desperately looks for options to bolster his lacklustre midfield at Old Trafford.

But reports from Spain suggest that Gundogan's father has already met with the Catalan clubs board as Barcelona look to complete a deal under the noses of Europe's top clubs.

The Dortmund midfielder, who scored against Bayern Munich in this years Champions League final is currently earning around £25,000-a-week which means offers from big spending Premier League and La Liga clubs could prove to tempting to resist.

Real Madrid have also shown an interest in the versatile player, seeing him as a long-term replacement for Xabi Alonso, who's contract expires at the end of the current season.
