Man Utd v Wolves preview

23 September 2009 10:31
Manchester United's back-up players will be given their chance to shine in the Carling Cup third-round tie with Wolves as Mick McCarthy plans an attack-minded approach. Following Sunday's dramatic 4-3 derby win over Manchester City, the holders are likely to name a completely different starting XI for Wolves' visit to Old Trafford. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson adopted this policy for last season's successful run to Wembley and will continue in that vein for Wednesday's game, live on Sky Sports 2. Fresh from scoring the late winner as a substitute against City, Michael Owen is in line to make his second start for the club since his arrival on a free transfer from Newcastle United. Italian youngster Federico Macheda is likely to partner Owen up front, with Danny Welbeck tipped for a role on the right flank. Darron Gibson was a key performer in last term's success and is pencilled in to start in central midfield, possibly alongside Michael Carrick, with Nani on the left. Wes Brown and Jonny Evans should team up in the centre of defence, with Gary Neville at right-back, while Fabio da Silva and Ritchie de Laet are fighting to start on the left. There is also expected to be a change in goal with Tomasz Kuszczak due to be given his chance to stake a claim to replace Ben Foster. Wolves boss McCarthy has vowed not sit back during the game and has vowed to field a 4-4-2 formation against the Premier League champions. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who scored for United against Barnet in this competition in 2005, will return to the starting line-up after recovering from injury. Winger Michael Kightly is also due to make his first start of the season after coming on as a late substitute in Sunday's win over Fulham. Austria international Stefan Maierhofer is due to partner Ebanks-Blake up front after McCarthy confirmed Kevin Doyle and Andy Keogh would not play. McCarthy is also looking to give some of his other squad members a run-out and that could lead to starts for the likes of Matt Hill, Ronald Zubar and Nenad Milijas.
