Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan is on the shortlist of candidates to replace Owen Coyle at Burnley.

But there will be no announcement for at least 24 hours after Coyle met Burnley chairman Barry Kilby at Turf Moor on Monday night and a decision on his move to manage neighbouring Bolton was delayed.

It is thought Burnley and Bolton have agreed a £3million compensation package for Coyle to switch clubs.

Former Burnley midfielder Phelan, 47, has been Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Old Trafford for two years but has no chance of succeeding the Scot at United.

Long goodbye: Coyle is all set to leave Burnley for Bolton in the next 24 hours

Phelan is expected to go head-to-head with Sir Alex's son Darren Ferguson and Peter Reid, No 2 at Stoke, for Coyle's job.
