ShareDarren Anderton thinks Luka Modric would be a 'perfect replacement' for Paul Scholes at Manchester United, but insists that Tottenham must do everything they can to hold on to their star midfielder.

Sir Alex Ferguson is a keen admirer of Modric and speculation that the United manager is ready to make a move for the 25-year-old have intensified with the retirement of midfield maestro Scholes.

In demand: United are said to be considering a summer bid for Modric

Last term Modric enjoyed his best season since joining Spurs, scoring four goals and setting up countless others to help the club to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Croatian has insisted he was happy at White Hart Lane, but did admit he would consider leaving should Tottenham shift their policy of not selling their biggest players.

Anderton, who made over 300 appearances in Tottenham's midfield, admits Modric's talent and tireless work-rate make him the obvious replacement for Scholes at Old Trafford.

Waving goodbye: Scholes has played his last game for Man United

'When you see that Paul Scholes has retired, you think that Luka Modric would be the perfect player to replace him,' Anderton said.

'Let's hope that for Tottenham's sake that isn't the case.

'I certainly hope he stays. For me, he has been Tottenham's best player. He is an incredible talent, a top player. I'm sure that many top teams will be looking at him.'
