Look who's Beck in town: One last hurrah for the maestro of Old Trafford

10 March 2010 12:05
He first arrived as a 13-year-old from Ridgeway Rovers in Leytonstone, a boy who'd worked part-time at Walthamstow dog track, who won a Bobby Charlton competition and spent a summer in Salford on trial.

He departed in 2003 as David Beckham, Manchester United superstar, England captain and global icon, the second most recognisable foreign name in Japan after Coca-Cola.

And last night Beckham came back, back to Old Trafford, back to the ground he said he never wanted to leave. Seven years. Some itch.

Over ear, David: Beckham's Milan team-mates give him a playful tweak during a break from training at Old Trafford on Tuesday night

He ran, he stretched in the northern cold, he pointed to the Stretford End. Beckham then trained energetically in the eight-man team that included Ronaldinho and Gennaro Gattuso. That detail suggested he will start this evening. But it is unconfirmed, as they say.
