Long-term injury fears for Ferdinand

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand faces a worrying week on the treatment table after failling to recover from a calf injury in time for his side's crunch clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

Ferdinand also looks certain to miss England's freindly against Brazil next week, and his manager Sir Ferguson is beginning to wonder if the player's problems are linked to a lower back problem.

"There has been no improvement," Ferguson said. "We are having to look at something different because usually you are back from a calf injury within two or three weeks.

"But there is no sign of recovery from this injury so we are looking at whether it is to do with his lower back."

Gary Neville is suspended for United's trip to Chelsea, but Nemanja Vidic is expected to return to give United much-need cover at the back.
