John Moston and Sir Alex Ferguson hooked on the Cheltenham Festival

The lure of the Festival will be too strong for Sir Alex Fergusonand John Motson despite it being the most hectic part of the footballseason.

Sir Alex will be with his counterpart in racing, close friend PaulNicholls, on Gold Cup day, while Motson plans to spend the whole weekat Cheltenham.

He became hooked 16 years ago when his first Festival bet, Arctic Kinsman, won the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.

He had backed it at 66-1. A regular on all four days of the fixture ever since, BBC TV's racing-mad veteran football commentator will be back there this week.

'It's a great occasion and I just love it,' said 64-year-old Motson.

'The buzz, meeting old friends, talking about the horses the night before the races.

'I enjoy every single moment.

'I go down there on the Sunday, and by the start of the meeting on the Tuesday I'm like everybody else at fever pitch.' Motson is leaving aside the claims of Kauto Star and stablemate Denman in Friday's Gold Cup to remain loyal to the team behind Imperial Commander.

'I know the people in the partnership who own him, so he'll be my each-way bet in the big one,' he said.
