The champions are in serious decline, to state the obvious. A 3-0 home demolition by their biggest rivals Liverpool just added to the long list of failures this season by United and in particular Moyes. It is looking likely that they will bow out of the Champions League this week to Olympiakos. They will have nothing of note left to play for if this happens, bar an outside chance of a Europa League spot for next season. Looking at Liverpool this season and their lack of European competition, United may feel that seventh place and avoiding competing in Europe’s second tier competition may be more beneficial in the long run. It is the domestic league that they need to put all their focus on next season. This will be their first season finishing outside the top four in the Premier League era.
Considering that Moyes’ men will be all but deflated if they exit the Champions League this week, would this be the perfect time to reinvigorate the fans belief in the team’s future by showing him the exit door and bringing in a current United legend on a short-term basis until the end of the season? Let’s be honest here, Moyes is way out of his depth. He will not turn it around next season; he is inexperienced and cannot handle the pressure. It looks likely that the opportunity will not arise for him anyway after a hugely disappointing season at Old Trafford.
If speculation is correct, there is a possibility that Ryan Giggs may be given the opportunity to commence his managerial career at Old Trafford, albeit just for a couple of months. If this was the case, you can be sure that Sir Alex Ferguson would provide the Giggs with as much advice as needed. The Welsh winger could just be the man to reignite the belief into the Old Trafford faithful. Giggs is currently operating in a player-coach role and the next step into a managerial career is imminent.
It will come as no surprise, if at some stage in the future Giggs is given a full time position as United manager, although this may be a number of years from now. For now the champions really need to look at bringing in a successful manager with a wealth of experience. This is likely to take place in the summer, with Louis Van Gaal tipped as the ideal candidate for the position. Maybe Giggs could be his number two? Who knows, but one thing is for sure, David Moyes will be looking for a new job very soon.
