Injured Michael Carrick To Miss England Euro 2016 Qualifier

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad for Tuesday night's Euro 2016 qualifying clash with Switzerland at Wembley.

Roy Hodgson's side are bidding for the three points which would secure top spot in Group E but now must do without Carrick, who was an unused substitute in Saturday's 6-0 win at San Marino.

"@ManUtd midfielder @carras16 has withdrawn from the #3Lions squad due to injury and will return to his club," England wrote on Twitter.

The nature of the 34-year-old's injury was not disclosed.

Carrick has 33 caps but has not played for England since March's draw in Italy, missing the last three matches.

His absence means Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey could get another opportunity against Switzerland, having played against San Marino.

United play Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.
