Bayern Munich would rather have met Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-finals than Barcelona, according to Bayern midfielder Mark van Bommel.

The former Barca player thinks the Catalan giants are the best club in the world and would have favoured a draw against the defending champions.

Van Bommel, 31, said: 'We would have preferred to play Manchester United. We know that we have been drawn against the best team in the world.

'You never know [what might happen] in football, but we are realists and we think more about winning the Bundesliga than the Champions League.

'But that does not mean we will not give everything against Barca because we still dream about European glory.'

Bayern set a Champions League record in the first knock-out stage with their 12-1 aggregate win over Sporting Lisbon and sit second in the German Bundesliga, a point behind Hertha Berlin with nine games to play,

Jurgen Klinsmann's side have the advantage of playing the second leg against Barcelona at home, but the Bayern captain realises beating the La Liga leaders will be no easy task.

'We need to stop (Samuel) Eto'o, (Thierry) Henry, Iniesta, Xavi, (Rafael) Marquez, (Carles) Puyol.' he told Goal.com.

'But Xavi and Iniesta are both very good. Between the two of them they create the rhythm of the game. They are very quick at moving the ball and, best of all, they are rarely hurried.

"That is not easy and when I played with them it was like they played in slow motion at times.'
