FT: Hull City 0 Man Utd 1 Last updated: 24th May 2009 Agony: Phil Brown shows his frustration after Gibson's goal ALL OVER - and as the final whistle goes, word comes through from Villa Park that Newcastle have lost 1-0 and are down. Thanks for following this commentary game and don't forget to log on for reports and reaction from this last day of drama. 90+4 Gibson has another go but is wayward. Still no news on the final whistle at Villa but they are down to ten men with David Edgar sent off 90+2 United are controlling possession as they have for much of this game but a slip up sees them earn a throw. 90 Four minutes of added time to come. Can City conjure up that one clear-cut chance to ease their nerves? 87 Final change for United and Welbeck goes off to be replaced by Zoran Tosic. 86 Brilliant save from Myhill. Nani cuts in and lets fly but the Welsh international is equal to the effort and palms it away. 84 Welbeck bursts forward and goes for glory but his effort is blocked. Surely a pass to the side to Gibson was the ball there! 81 Last throw of the dice for Phil Brown as he sends on Daniel Cousin for Garcia. He almost makes an immediate impact but Kuszczak is able to get back to catch his header. 79 De Laet gives way for Rodrigo Possebon as Villa miss a sitter in their clash with Newcastle. 77 City continue to look bright without creating a great deal. Folan looks full of running but the home team just lack that bit of quality to unlock United's reserves. 75 Good try from Eckersley but his effort whistles just wide of Myhill's right-hand post. 73 Thankfully de Laet is back on his feet as Boateng concedes a free-kick in a dangerous position. Fletcher stands over it and takes it short but it comes to nothing. 71 Injury blow for United as de Laet is hurt in a tangle with Mendy. He receives treatment as news comes through that Chelsea are now 2-1 up at Sunderland. 70 Martin is robbed on the edge of the box as he shapes to shoot. 68 Another set-piece opportunity is wasted by Dawson. The hosts could be made to rue thuse missed openings. At the other end Macheda is put free but lacks composure and blazes over. 67 Another change for the hosts and Barmby comes off to be replaced by Mendy. Will this prove his last Premier League appearance? 66 Last throw of the dice for Newcastle as Michael Owen is thrown on by Alan Shearer. 65 Corner conceded by de Laet after Folan is sold short by Garcia. Dawson takes but Kuszczak is out well to punch away from Turner. 63 Pressure from United with Nani finding space but the home side are working hard to get the ball back and Folan brings it away but again the final ball is disappointing. 61 Neville is moaning again after conceding another free-kick which gives the Tigers the chance to swing the ball into the United box but Dawson's delivery is poor and is headed away. 59 The foul on Rafael sees the youngster replaced by Richard Eckersley. 59 Dean Marney is cautioned for a poor challenge on Rafael. 58 Gibson tries his luck but can't repeat his earlier strike and it flies over the bar. More misery for Boro who are 2-1 down at Upton Park. 57 Boateng wastes possession after good work from Fagan. City are looking brighter but it could all go badly wrong if Newcastle grab a goal at Villa. 55 Folan is straight into the action and wins a free-kick which Neville disputes. Marney strikes it well but straight into Turner and away for a throw. 53 Change for the hosts and Geovanni is withdrawn in favour of Caleb Folan who is back after a three-game ban. 52 Good save from Kuszczak to deny Barmby who gets up well at the far post. Marney takes the resulting corner which finds Turner but it's straight at the United keeper who gathers easily. Bright stuff from the home team though. Goals elsewhere Sunderland and Middlesbrough are now both level. It does not impact things here at the moment but that could all change. What a thriller this final day of the Premier League is conjuring up. 50 City are having to chase hard to see any of the ball here. They need to try and impose themselves on the game if they are to keep their destiny in their own hands. 49 Danger for the home side as Rafael feeds in a great cross which is hacked away by Turner from almost under his own bar. Danger signals for the Tigers. The corner comes to nothing though. 47 Sunderland have now fallen behind to a Nicolas Anelka goal at the Stadium of Light. Should there be a big turnaround here and at Villa Park then they could be sucked into danger. 47 Good work from de Laet as he gets on the end of Fletcher's pass to tee up Macheda but he can't get a shot away. 46 The teams are back out. Oh to be a fly on the wall of that Hull City dressing room. No changes at the interval as United get us underway again. Steffan in manchester says: "I am a 12 year old Man Utd fan but at the moment I think Hull deserve to stay in the league - so come on, work your hardest like you did in mid season." Gavin says: "Bit surprised that we're in front, but what a goal for Gibson. Fantastic strike. Also good to see Villa 1-0 up, but it looks like I'm going to be a fiver out of pocket. Last time I bet against my team!" Never mind Gavin! Far flung Neil from Nova Scotia, Canada, is following the online commentary and says: "The only game I can see today is the Villa vs Newcastle game so I have no fingernails left!!! Trouble is I am four hours behind, longer to either celebrate or feel the full effect of relegation! I am trying to keep the faith as a lifelong Tigers fan!! Gio to score another wondergoal to save us!!" Bernard says: "What a superb performance by Man Utd so far! Brilliant strike from Gibson to put us in the lead. Despite Man Utd fielding a weaker side, they have been dominant throughout the match and have been too much for Hull City to handle." What do you think Tigers fans? Feedback Katie has been in touch urging other Tigers fans to keep the faith. Nerves must be shredded at the KC Stadium though, Katie! 45 That's the interval. So what do you think of it so far? Can the Tigers survive the drop? Let me know your thoughts - chris.harvey@bskyb.com 45 We're into time added on now. The home side have looked pretty impotent so far and are clinging on to the fact Newcastle are behind at Villa Park. 44 Good burst of pace from Boateng who forces a throw which Ricketts hurls into the box. The ball breaks for Barmby who mis-hits his shot goalward but it's easy for the United keeper. 42 Booking for Barmby who leaves his foot in on Macheda. 41 Free-kick for City but Dawson wastes the effort which is tame and straight at Kuszczak. 40 Mix-up between Fagan and Barmby and the hosts waste a decent position. Any thoughts on the first half? Let me know - chris.harvey@bskyb.com 38 As Fagan chases a hopeless cause, news of a West Ham goal against Middlesbrough comes through. It's getting better and better for the Tigers. 36 Villa goal: And the news is starting to come through that Aston Villa are leading against Newcastle thanks to a Damien Duff own goal. As it stands, City are safe again. 35 Great strike Fagan finds Geovanni who rolls it back for Dawson who lets fly from 25 yards but Kuszczak is able to turn it over with his outstretched right hand. 34 So close Macheda wriggles free and gets a shot away which is just wide of Myhill's right-hand post. That would surely have been game over. 33 Free-kick for the Tigers but it is wasted by Geovanni who hoofs it way over the bar. Not sure what he was going for there. 32 United are starting to pick holes in the home defence and Welbeck has an opening but puts his shot just wide. 31 Boateng tries to seek out Geovanni with a cross-field pass but he can't inspire the home side. 29 Bit of a barney there between Neville and Kuszczak after a communcation breakdown forces the United skipper to concede a corner but again it is easily dealt with by the visitors' makeshift rearguard. 28 Chance for Turner who gets forward on the end of Dawson's centre but he nods it over. Better stuff there from the Tigers. 27 The home side look floored by that Gibson strike. Can they respond? What has Phil Brown got in his locker? 24 There was little sign of that goal coming but the visitors come close to adding a second when Macheda almost gets on the end of Nani's ball in. That would have been catastrophic for the hosts. 23 GOAL UNITED. What a great strike from Gibson who hammers it in from 20 yards with his right foot. Myhill had no chance there - and that goal puts City into the bottom three. What a trmendous first Premier League goal for the youngster. 20 Another corner for the Tigers taken by Dawson but it's cleared and United break at pace. For a time it's three on three and as Rafael whips in a cross, Martin tries to slide in to apply the finishing touch but he is inches from making contact. 19 Half a chance for Garcia. The ball breaks to him on the edge of the area but his curler is well over the bar. 17 Free-kick for the visitors taken by Nani but the Portuguese hits it straight at Myhill who gathers easily. The Tigers look comfortable so far but will a draw be enough to keep them up? 16 Still no goals in the other games likely to have an impact at the bottom of the table. So far so good for the home side who, as it stands, will stay up. 13 Great work by Geovanni who gets free down the left and crosses but the United defence are able to clear the danger. That was a good opening for the hosts. 12 Ricketts hurls in one of his long throws aimed at Turner but the central defender is penalised for a push in the United area. 10 Corner for the visitors forced by de Laet. Nani takes it short and is able to ease into the area but City defend their lines. They were half asleep for a moment there though and Nani could have done better. An early chance at Villa Park for Newcastle as Damien Duff's shot is fumbled by Villa keeper Brad Friedel but the ball narrolwy misses the upright. 8 Half an opening there for Fagan as Gary Neville appeals in vain for offside but the striker can't control the ball and Kuszczak is able to gather. 7 Fletcher tries to play in on the on-rushing Nani but the ball is too long and runs through to Myhill in the City goal. 5 With so many changes, United look a little disjointed at the moment and it is the home side who are pressing but Fagan's ball is over-hit and Barmby can't keep it in. 4 Sam Ricketts turns Welbeck and tries to get another cross in but it's a second corner for the Tigers. Dawson takes it left-footed but Kuscczak comes and punches well. 2 Youngster Ritchie de Laet concedes the first corner of the game. Marney takes and the ball goes all across the United box and out for a throw. 2 Nani is penalised for an early foul on Dawson who is clattered to the ground. 1 The home side get the game underway and the ball is pumped forward by Wes Brown on to the head of player-of-the-year Michael Turner. The teams are out and there's a cracking atmosphere at the KC Stadium. Can the Tigers book another season in the Premier League on the anniversary of their Play-off triumph last year? So what do you think of those line-ups? Has Fergie's much-changed side got enough quality to beat the battling Tigers? Let me know your thoughts - chris.harvey@bskyb.com Teams Hull: Myhill, Ricketts, Turner, Kilbane, Dawson, Garcia, Marney, Boateng, Barmby, Geovanni, Fagan. Subs: Duke, Hughes, Mendy, Halmosi, Folan, Zayatte, Cousin. Man Utd: Kuszczak, Rafael Da Silva, Neville, Brown, De Laet, Nani, Fletcher, Gibson, Welbeck, Martin, Macheda. Subs: Amos, Tosic, Possebon, Eckersley, Corry Evans, Drinkwater, James. United fan Gavin is another relishing the misery of the North East clubs and says: "I think that Hull are gonna do us this afternoon. I keep having visions of Tevez scoring two against us two years ago to keep West Ham up, and I think the same's going to happen today. Also, I know a few Newcastle and Boro fans, and it'd be great to laugh at them come Monday morning! Jules from Mebourne, Australia, thinks Ferguson will reward reserves players such as Chester, Lee Martin, Drinkwater and Eckersley with a chance in the senior squad. 2-0 win to United is his prediction. Carl says: "Whilst I never want United to lose, the prospect of seeing Newcastle relegated today fills me with joy. So some on Villa! Too strong United fan Rory believes the visitors will be too strong whatever team Fergie puts out and is going for a 2-1 win. Jordan also thinks it will be easy for the Red Devils and is tipping them for a 3-0 victory.
