How was it for you? Sportsmail's end-of-term report on United's squad

29 May 2009 13:55
Manchester United may have fallen at the final hurdle in their bid for a fourth and final trophy but it has still been a remarkable season for Sir Alex Ferguson's men. The Red Devils swept up the Barclays Premier League, Carling Cup and League Cup, although the Champions League proved just beyond them. As Ferguson's troops head away from Old Trafford for the summer, Sportsmail delivers its end-of-term report on the men who mattered. Edwin van der Sar Peter Schmeichel said the toughest job for a United keeper was to concentrate during periods of inactivity. Van der Sar was an expert and his 14-match run without conceding a league goal will live long in the memory... Staying or going?: Ready for what will surely be his last season at Old Trafford. Rating: 7/10 (Appearances 49, as sub 0) John O'Shea An example of how loyalty can bring reward. Never destined to be a star, O'Shea has filled the gap at full-back remarkably well. Staying or going?: Going nowhere. A key part of the squad even if he loses his place next season. Rating: 7/10 (Apps 53, as sub 3, goals 2) Rio Ferdinand Perhaps his best season at the club he joined in 2002. Few central defenders now read the game better. With maturity has come excellence. Any chance of the odd goal though, Rio? Staying or going?: It's hard to see him playing for another club before retirement. Rating: 8/10 (Apps 43, as sub 0, goals 0) Nemanja Vidic The club's player of the season after solid displays at the back. Just a shame that his two dreadful matches came against both Liverpool and Barcelona. Staying or going?: Why would Ferguson consider selling one of the world's best defenders? Rating: 8/10 (Apps 55, as sub 3, goals 7) Patrice Evra Form dipped as United briefly laboured in March and April, but the Frenchman enjoyed a terrific first half of the season. United are never the same going forward down the left when he is not in the team. Staying or going?: Happy at Old Trafford and a vital part of the backline. Rating: 7/10 (Apps 48, as sub 3, goals 0) Michael Carrick One of the best passers in the Premier League. There is certainly not a more under-rated one. The Geordie is essential to United's midfield and has usurped Paul Scholes as the most important member of a holding trio. Staying or going?: Not a chance that he'll go. Rating: 8/10 (Apps 43, as sub 6, goals 4) Darren Fletcher Once mocked as 'Fergie's son' by sceptical fans but has really come into his own this season. Fletcher played a starring role in the January dismantling of Chelsea and never looked back. A big-game operator now. Staying or going?: Maybe would have left a couple of years ago but not now. Rating: 8/10 (Apps 42, as sub 5, goals 4) Anderson The powerful Brazilian disappeared during the first half of the campaign but showed admirable deteremination and patience in order to force himself back into the reckoning. Staying or going?: Still needs to improve but Ferguson will offer him the chance. Rating: 7/10 (Apps 38, as sub 9, goals 0) Cristiano Ronaldo That he is top scorer again says everything, and his ability to deliver out of nothing is astonishing. But his attitude is questionable and he looks like he only fancies it when things are going well. Staying or going?: The £75million question. Stay tuned. Rating: 8/10 (Apps 53, as sub 5, goals 26) Wayne Rooney United's most consistent and important player. We won't forget the punch he aimed at the corner flag at Fulham but what about the yards he has covered this season? Staying or going?: Staying - presumably for life - at Old Trafford. Rating: 8/10 (Apps 49, as sub 10, goals 20) Dimitar Berbatov An improvement in the critical final stages of the season saved the Bulgarian from a six. Bags of quality but he must learn to apply himself much more. Staying or going?: Ferguson should give him another year but the striker looks wildly overpriced at £30m. Rating: 7/10 (Apps 44, as sub 8, goals 14) Ben Foster Question marks linger over the Englishman. A hero in the Carling Cup shootout but a big season for him next time around. Staying or going?: Will be patient as he waits for Van der Sar to retire but needs first-team football in World Cup year. Rating: 6/10 (Apps 9, as sub 2) Rafael Scored a special goal in November's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal. An incredible talent with composure and confidence to match. Staying or going?: Going nowhere Rating: 8/10 (Apps 21, as sub 6, goals 1) Jonny Evans It's an onerous task filling in for Ferdinand or Vidic but the Irishman has done it superbly. Looked like a veteran at times. Staying or going?: Big part of future but expect cheeky bids. Rating: 8/10 (Apps 35, as sub 5, goals 0) Ryan Giggs Used to the bit-part role, but what an example the PFA Player of the Year has been this season. Staying or going?: Probably his last year in the game. Rating: 8/10 (Apps 46, as sub 19, goals 4) Paul Scholes The maestro's contribution fell away later in the season but he is still capable of moments of sublime creativity. Staying or going?: Considering a player-coach role with Stoke. Rating: 6/10 (Apps 34, as sub 11, goals 3) Carlos Tevez Will this be the last of his two seasons at United? Loved by fans and the scorer of one of the great derby goals. Staying or going?: Off unless United agree to pay £25m. Rating: 7/10 (Apps 50, as sub 17, goals 15) Ji-sung Park The South Korean's commitment and consistency was rewarded with a start in the Champions League final. Staying or going?: A key part of the set-up. Rating: 7/10 (Apps 40, as sub 9, goals 4)
