Aug 25, Portsmouth 0 Manchester United 1 (Telegraph rater Sir Alex Ferguson: 8.01 out of 10) United's first win of the season following an opening day draw with Newcastle thanks to a goal from Darren Fletcher. Sept 21, Chelsea 1 Manchester United 1 (Dimitar Berbatov: 3.68) Two dropped points at Stamford Bridge mean United have won just one of their opening 4 matches, with defeat to Liverpool at Anfield coming before this result. Ferguson's displeasure at playing all of last season's top ten away from home in the first half of the season appears justified. Oct 18, Manchester United 4 West Brom 0 (Cristiano Ronaldo: 6.72) Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dimitar Berbatov and Nani get the goals in a rout of the bottom club sees United up to fourth and seemingly hitting their stride after a difficult start to the season. Nov 08, Arsenal 2 Manchester United 1 (Ferguson: 4.61) Samir Nasri inspires Arsenal to victory in one of the games of the season leaving United with a single point from their away matches against the other members of the 'Big Four' for the season and eight points behind Liverpool at the top, though with a game in hand. Nov 30, Manchester City 0 Manchester United 1 (Edwin van der Sar: 7.23) A nervy, hard fought win over their City rivals signals the start of a 12-match run in which United fail to concede a goal, a run in which the only dropped points come in a 0-0 draw with Tottenham on Dec 13 in a run that builds the platform for their successful defence of their title. Jan 13, Manchester United 3 Chelsea 0 (Nemanja Vidic: 7.16) United sweep aside a disjointed Chelsea in the death throes of Luiz Felipe Scolari's ill-fated spell in charge to assert themselves as favourites to overhaul Liverpool's lead at the top of the table. Jan 17, Bolton 0 Manchester United 1 (Ferguson: 5.88) It isn't pretty and Bolton make them work for it but the narrow win over Gary Megson's side sends United top for the first time in the season after playing catch up following missed games due to the European Super Cup and the trip to Japan to win the Fifa World Club Cup in December. Feb 18, Manchester United 3 Fulham 0 (Wayne Rooney: 7.82) United are in scintillating form as they put Fulham to the sword in ruthless fashion with Paul Scholes, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney scoring the goals in a bravura team performance. Feb 21, Manchester United 2 Blackburn Rovers 1 (Ronaldo: 7.5) Roque Santa Cruz becomes the first player to score against United in the league for 1334 minutes of football when he equalises Wayne Rooney's opener but Cristiano Ronaldo ensures United stretch their lead over Liverpool to eight points. Mar 04, Newcastle 1 Manchester United 2 (Rio Ferdinand: 6.64) A perfunctory win, their 13th in 14 Premier League matches, leaves United seven points clear of both Liverpool and Chelsea with a game in hand and the title theirs to lose. Mar 14, Manchester United 1 Liverpool 4 (Vidic: 2.11) United's biggest ever home defeat to their fierce rivals for whom Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are at their devastating best, with the erstwhile infallible Nemanja Vidic sent off after being mastered by the Spaniard. Mar 21, Fulham 2 Manchester United 0 (Rooney: 4.03) Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney are both sent off as huge cracks in United's defence appear and the season threatens to fall apart around them as victory for Liverpool sees them end the season within a point of United, though Ferguson's side still had a game in hand. Apr 5, Manchester United 3 Aston Villa 2 (Federico Macheda: 8.99) A stunning injury-time winner from 17-year-old Federico Macheda hands United a barely deserved victory over game Villa, themselves struggling for form, in what feels even at the time like a decisive blow in the title race. Apr 25, Manchester United 5 Tottenham 2 (Carlos Tevez: 8.25) Trailing 2-0 at the break, a helping hand from referee Howard Webb, a supine Tottenham and the brilliance of Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo turned what looked to be another United wobble in to a stroll in the park for the defending champions.
