HATCHET MAN: Starved of glory since the 60s, do City really need another United reject in £18m Old

The title of Contradiction Club in the Premier League is always one fiercely, if unconsciously, fought over. Consistency and top flight football seldom mix, but Manchester City are setting new standards - and mopping up Manchester United's rejects into the bargain. First the newly crown richest club in the world wanted to buy all the biggest stars in the game. Then manager Mark Hughes insisted they were building slowly...and spent £48million on new players in the January transfer window. Europe was a key target, then missing out was no big deal. Now chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak says there is no rush for success...but they must finish in the top six next season. They are also apparently not planning to 'splash money around' despite making Diego Forlan an £18m target. Trying to steal Carlos Tevez from United made sense, but signing the Atletico Madrid striker who couldn't score goals in the Premier League is madness that overshadows City's contradictions. He may have found his feet in Spain but that doesn't mean he will be able to adjust any better to English football second time around and recruiting United's discards won't be popular. Old Trafford fans may have taken to Forlan as a kind of cult hero, enjoying his idiosyncrasies as he refused to give up on the lost cause of his career at the club, but they will love him even more if he inflicts pain on City by signing for them and failing to find the net.
