HATCHET MAN: If United do win anything this season it will be in spite of Berbatov not because of hi

Dimitar Berbatov wants Manchester United to claim the Premier League title and Champions League crown so he can say he is a winner like his team-mates. But even if the Bulgarian gets gold in both competitions, he still has some way to go to prove he is a true champion. The former Tottenham striker was supposed to be the Eric Cantona signing, the £32.5m goalscorer who added a certain je ne sais quoi to Sir Alex Ferguson's team. Berbatov was taken to Old Trafford to sprinkle some magic that was missing, but he has only provided glimpses of what he can do. In such a competitive attacking line-up, he has struggled to make a place his own and there have even been whispers that manager Ferguson would consider offloading him in the summer if he thought it would help him land Lyon's Karim Benzema. He has the talent to pull the strings for United but still leaves fans with the impression he is not at full pelt and for the money he cost that leaves him some way short of being seen as a genuine champion - whatever medals he collects.
