HATCHET MAN: If Ronaldo is staying at United why is Sir Alex so irritated?

07 April 2009 11:35
Sir Alex Ferguson tried to shut down questions on Cristiano Ronaldo's future on Monday, reacting indignantly to the fact the issue was even raised. The Manchester United manager claimed it was 'pathetic' that the journalists wanted to know what might happen in the summer and what the player had to say on the subject. But by revealing his irritation Ferguson is more likely to have encouraged debate than to have stamped it out. If United and their manager are supremely confident of keeping Ronaldo they should show it. By appearing prickly and sensitive on the issue, Ferguson makes the club look  worried. Even given his reputation for throwing his weight around, he surely must accept that with Real Madrid ensuring the subject remains live people will  wonder if a transfer could be on. Ronaldo can hardly expect the subject to die down after all he did to inflame it last summer and with fans unsure of his attitude at times this season the Portuguese and his manager need to find a more relaxed way to tackle questions. They will not be going away.
