Harry Kane finally targeted by United and could exit in the summer

Given the players sensational season it has been something of a surprise not to see the Champions League clubs lining up to lure the player away from White Hart Lane. Perhaps one of the reasons for the reluctance so far is his age and the fact that one great season may not be enough to convince bosses of his long-term value and potential.

That said it seems that the Kane brand does have a lot of value in it on its own and Manchester United are first to recognise the striker is definitely worth the benefit of the doubt. £40million has been mooted by the report as a figure that should do the trick to get Spurs to sell the England international and PFA Young Player of the Year. A report in the Mail suggests that the figure could even be £45million.

The Times states that Kane figures highly in the plans of Louis van Gaal and will be a player to feature in his £300million overhaul with Champions League football all but guaranteed. Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman has said the club is delighted with his performance and confirmed that further new players would come to the club and others whose contracts are entering their final year would be offered new deals if the club intends to keep them.

"We expect to be active again during the window,’ he said. “The squad will be absolutely deep enough and ready to challenge on all fronts next year and that involves ins and outs in the summer.”

Woodward said that “eight or nine” of 30 first-team players will be out of contract at the end of next season.

“That’s a fairly normal ratio," he explained, before adding that talks were currently ongoing with those players out of contract this summer whom the club want to keep.
