Owen Hargreaves is already targeting a return to the England squad ahead of the World Cup next summer. The Manchester United midfielder is nearing full fitness having been out for over a year with tendinitis in both knees. The 28-year-old underwent ground-breaking surgery with renowned knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman in America where he went on to spend most of his rehabilitation. The former Bayern Munich ace is set to return to first-team action at the end of the month while the player is already imagining an England call-up despite the competition for midfield places increasing in his absence. Manchester City's Gareth Barry has made the holding midfield role his own over the past year but Hargreaves, voted England's best player at the 2006 World Cup, is confident he can push for a place in time for next summer's finals. "It's looking well. I want to make sure this last hurdle is successful and hope I'll be back with the team very soon," he said. "It is a very exciting time just being part of the England set-up. We have a fantastic group of players and a successful manager. We have had a great qualifying campaign, which we didn't have for Euro 2008. "This was the first hurdle and it's a shame I couldn't have been part of it more. I hope I can get back to being healthy and play some great games for Manchester United then get back into the England team." Hargreaves has not played for England since the 2-0 friendly win over USA at Wembley in May 2008 but has been selected every time he has been available under Fabio Capello.
