Great Alan Green debate: Is Five Live commentator most annoying in Britain?

20 February 2009 01:23
Charles Sale, in his brilliant Sports Agenda column today, has reported Fulham's displeasure at Alan Green's calling of Manchester United's 3-0 thumping of the Cottagers this week.

What do you think about the BBC Five Live commentator's coverage of Barclays Premier League action? Is he the most annoying in Britain? Or simply calling it as he sees it?

Here's what Charles Sale reported this morning:

Courting controversy: Alan Green

BBC Sport have put their full support behind radio football commentator Alan Green over the latest furore surrounding the highly controversial broadcaster.

Fulham were so incensed by Green's commentary during their 3-0 Premier League defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night  that head of communications Sarah Brooks took it upon herself to prevent Five Live from interviewing manager Roy Hodgson afterwards in protest at the high amount of criticism.

Brooks said: 'We always co-operate with the media and never complain about fair criticism. But Alan Green's comments about Fulham appalled some of our fans, who made their views known on the message boards or contacted me during the game.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

'I also listened to some of his commentary myself and remarks like 'Fulham should not have bothered to turn up' were insulting. In those circumstances, I didn't feel it appropriate for Five Live to speak to our manager.'

However, Fulham's inept display hardly merited one of their PR operatives acting as a personal censor to the radio rights holder.

A Five Live spokesperson said: 'Alan Green's commentary was robust and opinionated, as you might expect, but consistent with the views of other members of the commentary team, Mike Ingham and Jan Molby.

'We feel the commentary team's assessment of the match was fair, reasonable and informed.'
