UEFA never appoint a referee to both legs of any tie least of all a semi-final. [LNB]However, after the excellent performance of Carlos Velasco Carballo, the Spanish referee, and his entire team of six, they should consider it. [LNB]It is hard to believe the official, who is only No 4 in his country, is new to the Champions League this season. No wonder UEFA fast-tracked him.[LNB] In control: Carlos Velasco Carballo had an excellent game in charge of Schalke and Manchester United[LNB]His decisions were consistent, his cautions clear and advantages a joy to see in such a high-profile game. [LNB]Unusually for a southern European, he did not give free-kicks whenever players fell to the ground and the game flowed without a hint of controversy due to his handling.[LNB]He had done his homework, as well; he knew Javier Hernandez is tasked with unsettling goalkeepers at corners. This was an important role giventhe excellent Manuel Neuer's preference to come off his goal line. [LNB] Taking no nonsense: Carlos Velasco Carballo (centre) deals with a frustrated Wayne Rooney (right)[LNB]Carballo spoke to Hernandez to make him aware he was being watched and, after giving free-kicks against him, Hernandez stopped. It can be done.[LNB]England may have the best individual referee in Howard Webb but if this is Spain's No 4 they have better strength in depth, not dissimilar to their players.[LNB]  Schalke 0 Manchester United 2: Rooney and Giggs fire Reds a step closer to WembleyFerguson praises players as United stroll to comfortable victory over SchalkeCHAMPIONS LEAGUE LIVE: Schalke 0 Manchester United 2 - the action as it happenedAll the latest Manchester United news, features and opinion [LNB]  Explore more:Places: Spain, United Kingdom
