Giggs named BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Ryan Giggs beat off Formula One world champion Jenson Button to be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Sunday night.

The 36-year-old Manchester United legend is the most decorated player in English football history, and last season added an 11th Premier League title to his haul.

"Perhaps I've become more appreciated as I have got older," said Giggs. "It's unusual for a 36-year-old to be playing with a team like Manchester United for 20 years but I am enjoying it and long may it continue."

Welshman Giggs has recently signed a new contract at Old Trafford.

"It was the first I had heard of it the other day so I was quite pleased," the evergreen midfielder said.

"My contract ends at the end of the year but hopefully there will be another year after that."

England manager Fabio Capello was named coach of the year, in light of his team's smooth path to qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

"I am proud to win this award but I want to share this with all my staff and the players who will be with me next year in South Africa." Capello said.
