Gibson gets chance to shine

DARRON Gibson will start in Manchester United's Champions League Group B encounter with Besiktas at Old Trafford on Wednesday. The 22-year-old Irish midfielder is highly regarded by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and enjoyed a breakthrough season last term when he made 14 appearances for the Reds. He was a key part of their Carling Cup success and marked his potential on the final day of the season when he scored the only goal of the game against Hull City with a spectacular long-range strike. Ferguson was more cagey about the rest of his team but Gibson looks set to be among a number of changes to the side which beat Everton at the weekend, with Gabriel Obertan tipped to start his first European tie. Young strikers Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda will be on the bench at least but Rio Ferdinand (back), Jonny Evans (calf) and John O'Shea (ankle) have all been ruled out. Team (from): Van der Sar, Foster, Kuszczak, Neville, Rafael, Brown, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Anderson, Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Gibson, Giggs, Park, Obertan, Valencia, Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Welbeck, Macheda.
