Foster's England fight

BEN Foster is this week fighting to save his World Cup dream. The United goalkeeper was called up by England as an emergency replacement for Robert Green, who was red carded against Ukraine on Saturday. But he still has it all to do to convince Fabio Capello that he is ready to go to South Africa next summer. It has emerged that the England coach first turned to West Brom keeper, Scott Carson, after Green was ruled out of tomorrow's clash with Belarus - which is a measure of how far Foster has slipped down the pecking order. But he was handed a reprieve when Carson was unable to join up with his country because of an ankle injury. Foster's alarming slump in form has put both his international and club futures in jeopardy. A series of high profile gaffes have put the spotlight on him and raised serious doubts as to whether he is capable of succeeding Edwin van der Sar as United's number one. Sir Alex Ferguson has so far stuck by the man who he has constantly earmarked as a future first choice for England - but some reports claim the United manager is considering a shock move for David James in January. That seems highly unlikely with Van der Sar returning from a broken hand and Tomasz Kuszczak also at Old Trafford. But it does raise further question marks about Foster's long-term future at United.[LNB]
