Fletcher - Critics spur us on

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher feels the Red Devils have silenced their critics of late. Derby success over Manchester City on Sunday rounded off a memorable week for Sir Alex Ferguson's side, both at home and abroad. A gutsy 3-1 victory away at Tottenham got United up and running, before a tricky trip to Turkey in the UEFA Champions League saw them emerge with a 1-0 midweek win over Besiktas. The confidence obtained from those results was then carried into the weekend, with an enthralling seven-goal thriller against City at Old Trafford eventually going the way of the hosts. Scottish star Fletcher, who bagged a brace in the dramatic 4-3 win over the Blues, feels United's recent run of results has proven to their detractors that they are capable of competing for top honours once again this season. "Everyone has been writing us off and the lads have responded," he told the Manchester Evening News. "Winning away at Tottenham, away at Besiktas and now winning the derby is a fantastic reply. It was a hard week in football terms and you cannot ask for much more than how we responded. "We know how much quality we have got. We believe in the manager and we believe in the players in the dressing room. We look around the dressing room and you are happy to have those players in your team. "People have questioned us but you have to use that in the right way and use it as a determination to prove people wrong. We have done that."
