Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted it is not realistic for players to take part in Euro 2012 and the London 2012 Olympics.
The FA did not rule out the possibility of players appearing in both tournaments on Thursday when Stuart Pearce was confirmed as manager of the Team GB football team for the London Games. And Team GB chef de mission Andy Hunt claimed home nations associations would "not stand in the way of any player who wants to be involved".
"This has been spurred by Argentina and Nigeria sending out their strongest teams (to the Olympics) last time," said Ferguson. "That has given the BOA an opening. But our league is different. Players need their rest and to recover."
He added: "I do not see how it is possible (doubling up with Euros). I am sure what I am saying won't make any difference but it is a fact."
Turning his attention to the Sunday's derby showdown with Manchester City, who top the Premier League table two points ahead of United, Ferguson said: "I have always accepted a challenge. It has happened time and time again. They are top of the league. We have to do something about it."
Ferguson revealed that he has no fresh injury worries after United's 2-0 Champions League win over Otelul Galati.
