Ferguson rules out January transfers

Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out raiding the transfer market in January in a bid to help ease the defensive injury crisis at Manchester United.

Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea, Gary Neville and Rafael Da Silva all missed Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Fulham - the Red Devils' fifth Premier League defeat of the season.

First-choice goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar also remains sidelined with a knee injury, but Ferguson is still not planning on getting the cheque book out when the transfer window reopens in January.

The United boss seldom opts to strengthen his squad during the mid-season break, with his double swoop for Vidic and Patrice Evra in January 2006 his last major January outlay.

"We hope that Wes Brown will be back in a week or 10 days' time, Rio Ferdinand is improving, Gary Neville is getting there and Rafael Da Silva has now started training," revealed Ferguson.

"We are not so bad and we are not looking at signing players."
