Ferguson firmly behind van der Sar

Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Edwin van der Sar for calling it quits rather that driving himself into a brick wall next season. The 40-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper will retire from the game this summer, ending two decades at the top and leaving Ferguson to begin a search for his successor. There are some who feel Van der Sar should go on. Certainly his performances this term have not shown any sign of age catching up with the former Holland star. However, Ferguson understands why Van der Sar has taken his preferred course of action. And he believes the veteran is absolutely right. "He could play on but he wants to go out at the very top," said the United boss. "I can use my own experience, when I finished playing I tried to keep my fitness. With the staff at Aberdeen and even down here we used to go on long runs. But they got shorter each year. When you get to 40 you might still be playing really top level football but you know you are going to hit a wall some time. Edwin is making sure he doesn't hit that wall while he is at United."
