Fergie to leave out Rooney: United boss to rest stars for historic Quintuple bid

Sir Alex Ferguson is facing a major quandary today whether to gamble with Wayne Rooney's fitness against his old club Everton and risk Manchester United's chase for glory in the Premier League and Champions League. Ferguson admits he will have to play a below-strength side in this afternoon's FA Cup semi-final against Everton and will weigh all his options as he attempts to keep his team on course for an historic five trophies. United face a crucial 17 days, with today's game at Wembley followed by Premier League matches against Portsmouth, Tottenham and Middlesbrough interspersed with a Champions League semi-final against bitter rivals Arsenal. Rooney finished last Wednesday's win at Porto barely able to walk after damaging his foot. Fears last night that he had broken a metatarsal, an injury that could put him out for the rest of the season, were dispelled emphatically by Manchester United. The 23-year-old striker is desperate to play against Everton, the team he grew up supporting and watched at Wembley the last time they won a trophy, in the FA Cup final against United in 1995. But Ferguson, who is even considering handing teenager Federico Macheda hisfirst start, knows he must juggle the need to rest players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick, and possibly Edwin van der Sar and Dimitar Berbatov.
