Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson hopes to pip his father Sir Alex to the signing of Stockport County defender Josh Thompson.[LNB] Ferguson jnr has confirmed Peterborough have made a bid for Thompson, who trained with Manchester United and West Brom at the end of last season.[LNB]Both United and the Baggies remain keen to sign the 18-year-old, but Ferguson feels Posh are in pole position to capture the centre-half.[LNB]"He's one of the top young defenders in the country right now, along with Ryan Bennett at Grimsby," Ferguson told the Evening Telegraph.[LNB]"We've made an offer and I believe we have a good chance of getting him. He was on trial at United last season and at West Brom, and I know both clubs were impressed.[LNB]"But as far as I know we are the only ones to have made a bid so far. Josh is our sort of player. He's very talented and yet capable of great improvement."[LNB]Thompson has made nine appearances for the Hatters since making his debut in January and could be the latest player to leave the financially crippled League One club.[LNB]
