Fergie retains hunger pangs

Sir Alex Ferguson has hit back at the mere suggestion that his desire to be successful could be on the wane. The Manchester United boss has enjoyed a glittering 23-year career in the Old Trafford hot-seat, collecting countless major honours over the years. Among the accolades he has accrued are 11 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League winners' medals. He had been hoping to conquer Europe again this season, with United looking to defend their continental crown against Barcelona on Wednesday. They failed in their efforts to make history by becoming the first team to take the trophy in consecutive seasons under the competition's current format, as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat in Rome. Ferguson was understandably disappointed at the manner of his side's performance on Europe's biggest stage, with Barcelona good value for their comfortable success on Italian soil. At 67 years old the United boss knows opportunities such as that may not come around for him again, despite his reluctance to slip into retirement any time soon. He will certainly be pursuing the Champions League title with vigour again next season, though, having responded to a question regarding his appetite for the game on Wednesday night with customary disdain. "I don't understand that question on a night like this," he said. "I don't know why you're asking me that question. It's a b***** stupid question."
