Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Manchester United can eventually match Real Madrid's record of being nine-time European champions. United face Barcelona on Wednesday night in Rome looking to win the UEFA Champions League for the third time during Ferguson's illustrious reign. The Red Devils also won the European Cup in 1968 and victory over Barcelona would put the club one behind Liverpool's British record of five successes. Ferguson does not expect to catch Real during his time in charge, but believes the current squad have the potential to be multiple winners of the Champions League. "It may not be in my time, but it's something to aim for," said Ferguson of Real's record. "This is a young team with the right kind of experience that could win it more in future years." UnusualUnited are also striving to become the first club to successfully defend the Champions League since the competition changed format in the early 1990s. Back-to-back wins in the European Cup were commonplace and Ferguson is determined to see his team create a piece of history. "In the history of the European Cup it was done regularly," he added. "We're good at doing things for the first time. It's unusual no one has defended it yet. "Some won it two or three times in a row. There were cycles of teams winning it like Ajax, Bayern and Real Madrid. "I can't give you a reason for why it hasn't happened since, but we have an opportunity to change that and I hope we can take it."
