Highly rated Benfica defender, 26, said to be on his way to Old Trafford.

Widespread rumours have broken out that Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay is on his way to Manchester United for a reported fee of £17 million. It was previously thought that the player could return to Real Madrid just one year after his move to Benfica, but it appears new United manager David Moyes has secured his signature.

Garay showed some of his class with impressive performances last season, this has prompted interest from the powerhouse clubs around Europe, with Manchester United appearing to have won the race to ascertain his signature.

Central defence is an area United have had problems with in the past and Moyes looks keen to strengthen this area of the team with Ferdinand and Vidic both blighted with injuries in the twilight of their careers and Jones, Evans and Smalling still lacking vital experience. Garay could provide the core stability that the team has needed in recent years after a few too many shaky defensive performances highlighted their weakness last season.

Garay isn't the only South American that appears to have secured a move to Old Trafford this week, with Uruguayan starlet Varela, 20, in the country this week to seal his £2 million move after impressing United coaches with his displays in his one month trial at the club at the end of last season.
