Former Manchester United and England defender Brian Greenhoff has died at the age of 60, according to reports in the British media on Wednesday.

The website of regional newspaper the Manchester Evening News said he had passed away at his home in Rochdale, near Manchester, on Wednesday morning, without specifying the cause of death.

Greenhoff, who played at centre-back and in midfield, signed for United as a youth player in 1968.

He was joined at the club by his elder brother, Jimmy, in 1976 and a year later the pair lifted the FA Cup after a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Brian Greenhoff made 271 appearances for United, scoring 17 goals, and won 18 caps for England.

He later joined Leeds United and also worked as both a player and a coach at Rochdale.
